by Jaume Ollé, 12 January 2001

The Province of Davao, formerly (and still occasionally) called Davao del Norte, occupies the head of the Davao Gulf in Southern Mindanao, Philippine Region XI. It contains two cities, Tagum (the capital) and the Island Garden City of Samal (in the gulf). It does NOT contain the city of Davao. Bananas are the dominant export crop, and rice, maize, and several other food crops are grown for consumption on Mindanao. Little remains of the forests. Livestock raising and fishing contribute to the economy, and there are various manufactures. Gold-mining was important in former times, and probably accounts for the gold cross on the shield, but seems to have been given up. Sand, gravel, guano, and marble are all extracted. The provincial government encourages tourism, and Samal is one of the national government’s five top goal areas for tourist development.
John Ayer, 29 May 2001

Storyboarding my presentation. Our conversation happened before my Mobit team had conducted our workshops and launched our pilot project. At the time, I had a few ideas. After launching Mobit, I think it’s a lot clearer now how this could be done. The two ladies are members of a new political party called Katribu who are running for political office to represent the voice and hopes of indigenous peoples in the Philippines. How would internet literacy help them achieve their political and community sustainability goals? What other solutions could we come up with together, I wonder?

Knight News Challenge: VozMob (Mobile Voices) Affiliate Network

Knight News Challenge: VozMob (Mobile Voices) Affiliate Network: Supporter of open source tech?...

Late-night #mobit drupalcon w CPU girls Gladys & Almondz at...

Late-night #mobit drupalcon w CPU girls Gladys & Almondz at a Blenz Coffee shop in Global City, Manila. It’s quarter to 8am. I’m sitting on a beautiful ornate iron lawn chair the colour of grass, greeting the early morning sun with joy, gratitude, and hope. #mobit begins it’s dry run tomorrow, that is, we start the field work of covering stories in remote areas not very many frequent unless you live there, or are a transnational mining company laying claim to the land and exploring for minerals such as gold, silver, copper, and oil. The people in these remote places have been struggling, some for over 20 years, against the onslaught of multinational corporations, colonial landowners, and military aggression. These words seem extreme to many of you, especially during breakfast, but for the people living in these areas, this litany of “aggressors” are what they have to live with day in and day out. I keep repeating the effects that the transnational national resource extractive industries coupled with militarization (“investment defense forces”, militias, call it what you like) on the land, in all life, on the human spirit to remind myself why this work is important despite the potential for threats of violence and death to my person. The army is supposed to protect the people from foreign aggression, not join with the multinationals in persecuting the people. It is my hope that this work will call upon those who value deeper meaning to life beyond accumulation of manufactured material wealth to act - to move it - in solidarity with the women, men, indigenous peoples, youth, and children who find themselves uprooted and pushed into the toxic front lines created by these resource extractive corporations and their military allies. Isn’t it about time we say enough to the pillage of our common birthright. Protect the land for it is what gives us nourishment for life.
